U. S. CORPS OF TOPOGRAPHICAL ENGINEERS |
The St Patrick's Day Parade in Denver is the second largest St. Patrick's Day parade in the United States. This year, the US Corps of Topographical Engineers, 1st Dragoon Regiment, 4th US Artillery, and a couple survivors of the Lewis and Clark expedition joined together to memorialize the San Patricio Battalion. Comprised primarily of Irish and Catholic deserters from the US military, the unit is remembered fondly in Mexico and pretty much ignored in the US. Our tongue-in-cheek entry was received enthusiastically by all parade viewers -- pretty much proving our point regarding the state of historical education in the US.
